Development from past to present

There were no chemicals in Celadon, The body of the pot is made of stoneware clay from a local resource. When fired in a reduction atmosphere the natural iron content of the glaze and of the body combine to produce the delicate shade of green which is associated with gook Celadon. . The result is a bright transparent gloss finish. The crackle is caused by a difference in the coefficient of contraction between the body and the glaze when the pot is cooled. It is a unique character of Celadon.

Rok-fah trees and Koh trees are rarely found at the moment and so is the stoneware clay. So we use ball clay which has the same quality of stoneware clay instead of it because we do not want to destroy natural resources. In terms of the glazing method, we use calcium carbonate, quartz, feldspars, iron and kaolin instead of ash from rare trees. Ferric oxide is use for drawing a pattern instead of resin from trees and iron from clay.

Steps of Production Process

1. Clay Preparation

Take ball clay or stoneware clay which is the high quality clay, less ferric oxide and strength. The moisture must be at least 20% (testing by kneading it in U shape 5 to 6 inches long).

2. Molding There are 2 way of Celadon moldings. They are:

2.1 Hand Molding: Throwing ball clay on a pottery wheel and shape it as your design.

2.2 Mix the clay in water to make slipper and pour it into a mold, the thickness is depends on the length of time you let it in the mold

3. Allow it to natural dry in the air. If you want to carve your Celadon, do it while it a leather hard dry.

4. The next step is bisque firing, in a tub kiln. Though stable in water, the bisque ware pots are still porous.

5. A second check for cracks and defects is made, then paint your pattern.

6. Glaze Celadon with glaze mixer. Let it dry

7. Reduction Fire again at 1,250 – 1,300 C. The crackle is caused by a difference in the coefficient of contraction between the body and the glaze when the pot is cooling. Some Celadon need gold paining to add more value, it has to be fired again at least 5 – 6 hours at 800 C. in the tub without carbondioxide.

Production Technology

They use modern firing tub instead of ancient firing tub used in the old days which dug in the ground and shaped it with bricks. Modern tub is made of high heat prevention material. It can be moved and control the temperature while operating. Besides use the modern firing tub, we also use plenty of molds for mass products. Then decorate them with designs and patterns.
